It could be that Weta made the biggest push to make it happen.

Default Thunderbirds in New Zealand

Film and Television production is an international industry. Remember the new Star Wars movie is being made in the U.K. Yes, I would prefer Thunderbirds to be made in the U.K. As long as the production team do a great job that is all that matters.

First things first -Purupus Thank you so much for doing this! I am glad you had a great time at Weta, getting the chance to visit a leading film studio like Weta must have been thrilling regardless of TAG. You asked the right questions and in the right way, and the answers are reassuring. Well, except the palm trees. Mr Frakes said that 10 years ago! Nevertheless, I have faith this will be great, and your answers have reinforced that thinking. Thank You.

Dunc, - I'm not sure I follow you. The original Star Wars films were made here in the UK at Elstree. Pick up scenes for Attack Of the Clones were done as Ealing Studios too.
Animation of this type is expensive. The only UK based company I can see doing this with live miniatures as well as CG is Aardman, and they are busy with their own projects. Plus, I think Chris is right. Weta are a formidable production house in the industry, I would not be surprised if they made moves by approaching ITV, rather than the other way round.
To be honest, the series will have as much or as little a UK feel to as the original series through the cast. Everyone announced so far is UK based, except perhaps David Menkin. Plus its the international appeal of the concept that has made it such a success internationally.

My only doubts now - its a shame some episodes will be remakes of original ones. Plus, can the attention to character detail and rounded stories really be nicely squashed into 25 mins? The hour long ep was one of the things that made Thunderbirds stand out alongside its sister series. Especially Captain Scarlet. (Both versions).

It was your questions that enabled me to compile this report. If I'd left it to me I would have just stood there, too shy to say anything, and would probably have thought of a million and one questions two hours later.

Default Newsflash!

Direct from Magnus at Weta Workshop:

Of interest to those in America: "...there is good reason why Thunderbirds fans should make it to the Weta Booth (#3613) at San Diego Comic-Con in July... I canít say any more than that at the moment..."

Anyone planning to go?

Here's a video of Weta assembling their display at Comic Con.

Check out the right side of the display at about 1:41 minutes.

Cool!

Before they fully set it up it looks like my old Matchbox toy Thunderbird 1, missing nose and all.
