Default UFO sets in 1970 film

Way back in the mid 1970s, I remember staying up late one night to watch a film called 'The Mind of Mr Soames'. I had only just started watching 'horror films' (The Fly being, possibly, the first) and would stay up (usually with my mum!) to watch anything that sounded like it might fit into that genre. Imagine my surprise when I saw whole shed-load of UFO props (from Skydiver, SHADO HQ, etc...) within the first few minutes!

The film was made in 1970 and is now available on youtube. (Or it was !!!)

I believe most of the UFO set pieces were bought up by a prop hire house when the series ended, so they would have been available for hire to any film or tv production that needed something futuristic-looking. They turn up in many sci-fi shows of the 1970s, including many episodes of Doctor Who and Blakes 7.

I remember watching the film on Anglia late one night in the 80's.
Unfortunately its only dvd availability is on the Warner Archive label which makes it around 13 - a bit more than I want to pay for it.
Although the UFO connection sounds interesting.
Didn't the same thing happen to Space 1999 materials being reused in Star Maidens?

Default Stock footage also used in Gerry's shows

Off on a slight tangent ... The bridge explosion in the opening titles of 'The Protectors' is from the 1957 Rank feature production of 'Campbell's Kingdom'.

I interviewed Tony Harding a few years back (he worked on UFO and then went to the BBC where he designed K9 amongst other things) - he said that when Century 21 closed, the consoles etc from UFO were taken by Effects Associates and were rented out by the BBC and others throughout the 70s. So they can be seen in several Doctor Who stories (The Green Death is a good example), Star Maidens and a list of others. I'm not sure if this included the SHADO and alien spacesuits, someone else might know that.

A lot of the less well-known miniatures were bought by the BBC at the same time (Ian Scoones recalled they cost about 70) and several one-off models from the later puppet series can be seen in early 70s Who stories. There's another thread on this subject somewhere on the forum.

The Doppelganger/UFO spacesuits turn up in a great many BBC sitcoms throughout the 70s. Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies and The Goodies etc.
