Default Is 'space:1999' a Gerry Anderson or a Lew grade production?

According to the times on the 6th of September 1975 when 'space:1999' premiered on LWT it was stated in the TV guide 'blast off into outer space with sir lew grade's space:1999' I would say that & 'the protectors' are not Gerry Anderson productions in my view.although Gerry & Sylvia created '1999' they were in fact are ITC productions & more like it was from lew grade like 'the saint' & 'the champions'.

An 'interesting' point of view.

Lew Grade certainly put up the money (or at least a HUGE chunk of it) for Space: 1999 and The Protectors. But he was not a producer. Gerry Anderson and indeed Sylvia Anderson were heads of the company that physically produced these (and of course many other!) shows. The Protectors could be said to be 'less' of a Gerry Anderson production than the others as the format of the show did not come from Gerry - although he must have made changes to it to some degree. Lew Grade called the shots but it was the likes of Gerry and Sylvia, Monty Berman, Robert S. Baker, etc, who produced the shows. So, whether they be Century 21, Group Three, Bamore or Tribune productions, Lew Grade was NOT the actual producer. He was, however, a great man and shaped independent television in the 1950s and 60s. As with Gerry Anderson, there will never and CAN never be another Lew Grade.

The Times would have announced Space as Lew Grades latest because at the time it was the UK's most expensive production to date so the cost was newsworthy and it was Lew Grade who gave the green light.

But the show is just as much of a Gerry Anderson production as any of his other shows which is why it says "Gerry Anderson Production" usually somewhere on the credits and Lew Grade never ever gets a name check on any of the tv series.

Perhaps he didn't like that because apparently a Year 3 of 1999 was a possibility knocked on the head by Grades switching to funding expensive theatrical films on which he was always due a screen credit.

Yes, I believe the SPACE:1999 season 3 of thirteen episodes was cancelled by Lew Grade after the budget was instead used on the failed Raise The Titanic motion picture.

as lew grade once quoted 'marriage was the best business deal in my entire career after that 'jesus of nazareth' & 'the muppets' referring to 2 of his finest commissions.in my point i would say 'jesus' & 'thunderbirds' were his best 2 series as they were been hailed as small screen epics 'jesus' had a all-star cast led by robert powell in the title role was a re-telling of the greatest story ever told, shot on expensive locations in tunisia & morocco & directed by one of the top filmakers franco zeferelli & 'thunderbirds' had movie-style techinques with brilliant SPFX work from the great derek meddings & a stirring score from barry gray to the brilliant world of gerry & sylvia anderson's supermarionation.

Absolutely.

Lew provided the 'finance' - Gerry provided the 'production'.

As simple as that and always has been.
