Default Character surnames.

As a lifelong fan of all things Gerry Anderson since I was a small boy in the 1960's, something dawned on me today that I am really surprised I never noticed before now. Up to Thunderbirds, all the Anderson heroes had dynamic surnames. Mercury, Zodiac, Tempest etc. But from Thunderbirds onwards they had regular everyday surnames. Trcy, Metcalfe, McLane etc. I wonder if there was any significance to this. Did Gerry and Sylvia make a concious decision to drop the fantastic names, or did the change come about without anyone really noticing?

Default Writing on the wall so to speak.

Dynamics.

The Andersons were always aiming for more realism in their concepts and characters with each series, trying to steer themselves towards live action.

Having said that, they switched to code names and in the case of Thunderbirds, dynamic first names. (The Tracy Brothers have names of Astronauts. Brains name has never been clarified. Parker as a very unusual first name.) The Spectrum officers as security / military characters have their colour code names. "Joe 90" speaks for itself. Admittedly it was a trait that seems to have evaporated at the point of The Secret Service and UFO, where titles and ranks really took over. Commander, Colonel, Doctor, Lieutenant. Much as they have in later series and other Sci Fi formats of this type, on both sides of the pond.

It's a subtle sign in the writing of how the Andersons sadly wrestled with the niche style of animated programmes and formats that made them famous, in favour of pursuing live action film making.
