I’ve got a huge amount of nostalgia for these “films”; on one level they were abominations but on another they were almost unavoidable as a fan in the 90s, and I’ve always been fascinated with how they came to be. I mainly remember these from the later Channel 5 and Polygram rereleases which either reduced the artwork to a tiny window on a VHS sleeve or supplanted it completely, so it’s great to finally have these glorious A4 sized card reproductions to fully admire. They are probably the most redeeming thing about the productions all these years on.

The book itself is a really interesting overview of the background to why they happened and the production process. There are still some unanswered questions – mostly why Polygram stuck with these so long when they could have released the individual episodes… but perhaps those are stories for another book.

On that note, perhaps Fanderson would consider publishing a book on those pre-DVD home entertainment releases, perhaps a patchwork of contemporary reviews as well as any production info there might be, and of course a showcase of the cover art now almost lost to time.
