Vivid unveils stunning Thunderbirds Are Go! toy range

Fanderson visited Britain’s largest toy trade show today to take a look at Vivid’s exciting new toy range to tie in with Thunderbirds Are Go!

In a sign of the huge interest and secrecy that continues to surround the series, Vivid’s Thunderbirds line was only on display in a separate sealed off room within the company’s main stand.

The star product was undoubtedly the Interactive Tracy Island Playset. The set boasts ‘smart technology’ that enables it to ‘know’ which craft is launching, and play appropriate sound and light effects. But one of the most impressive features of the product is the semi-automated launch sequences. This was demonstrated with Thunderbird 3, and it was fascinating to see the craft being moved up through the roundhouse under its own steam. The set also comes with a wrist controller that activates ‘mission sounds’ from John up in the space station.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Apart from the roundhouse, all the iconic elements have been preserved and updated – there are still collapsible palm trees and Thunderbird 1 still rises out of the swimming pool. In fact, the launch sequences for Thunderbirds 1 and 2 were being shown in the same room on a large 4K(ish?) screen. The combination of CGI and live action model sets was fascinating to watch and had an exciting, slightly surreal video game quality to it. It’s hard to see the series, and the toys, failing to appeal to children this Christmas. The Tracy Island retails at £79.99.

The Thunderbird craft toys that fit with the Tracy Island all come with realistic thruster sound effects and extendable features. Thunderbird 1 has retractable wings and a rotatable thruster to ensure a safe landing. Thunderbird 3  comes with extending legs used for attaching to things when drilling, which are released by a trigger under the craft. There are also realistic engine sounds when the middle shaft is rotated. As you would expect, Thunderbird 2 comes with a mini-Thunderbird 4, and features a  drop-down landing pod, retractable landing gear and TB2 engine sounds. Thunderbird 2 will retail at £14.99, while TBs 1 and 3 will retail at £9.99. There will be a  ‘value’ Vehicle Super Set containing all four craft (TB1, TB2, TB3 and TB4) (RRP £29.99).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Perhaps the most exciting toy for older fans was the larger-scale TB2 Playset which included  folding wings, drop-down entry doors, retractable landing gear (controlled by the wings) and realistic engine sounds. Apparently it also contains an intelligent IC trigger which knows when TB4 is or isn’t in the drop down central pod. As you can see, the TB2 cockpit  accommodates 2 x 1.5” action figures. The Thunderbird 4 craft included in the set also comes with a separate escape pod and opening rear air lock and lower pod door. This one is sure to be top of some people’s lists! (RRP £39.99)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Tracy brothers action figures were also on show. Measuring 3.75” inches in height, they feature nine points of articulation, and come with their own character accessories and removable helmets. There will also be a Hood action figure…but that was being kept under wraps now. The 6 action figures will retail at £7.99.

Finally, a very fetching blue Thunderbirds uniform will launch later in the year. The unform featured themed graphics and raised sculpting, and is expected to cost £19.99

Clearly the Thunderbirds ‘franchise’ continues to be in the very best of hands at Vivid. The company’s long and faithful association with the series was highlighted by the presence of their original Tracy Island toy at the show. The new Tracy Island is bigger, bolder  and bristles with lights, sound effects and mechanical features.

We expect many 50 year old fans to be buying these ‘for their children’ next Christmas.

Roberta Leigh dies

Fanderson was saddened to hear of the death of the novelist and TV producer Roberta Leigh, who passed away on 19th December.

Roberta produced The Adventures of Twizzle and two series of Torchy the Battery Boy during the late 1950s, at the advent of childrens’ television on ITV. It was on these shows that Gerry Anderson earned his directorial credentials with puppets, paving the way for him to set up his own company AP Films and achieve success as producer with Four Feather Falls.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s Roberta went on to create a number of other puppet series, including Sara and Hoppity and the conceptually-advanced Space Patrol, a contemporary and rival space exploration series to Fireball XL5.

As well as her major contribution to children’s television, Roberta was also a prolific children’s and romance novelist , and published under several pen names throughout her life.

She will be sadly missed.

Raise a glass to Gerry Anderson

On Boxing Day it will be exactly two years since Gerry Anderson passed away and left a hole in the hearts of his fans.

Whatever you’re doing that day, we invite all fans to raise a toast to Gerry, and the many other people who helped him make the shows we love.

How about making it Anderson-themed? Jeff Tracy’s favourite seems to have been scotch on the rocks, while Victor Bergman had a special bottle of brandy, and Lady Penelope always opted for Pernod while she was in Paris. Even if you’re on duty you could always have a non-alcoholic bottle of champagne (but don’t let the Mysterons touch it).

Cheers Gerry!

The Future Is Fantastic! is Fanderson’s convention for 2015

2015 will be, of course, the 50th anniversary of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s legendary series Thunderbirds, plus it will also see the launch of ITV Studios’ reimagining of the series as Thunderbirds Are Go. But on top of that there are so many other anniversaries to celebrate:

  • Four Feather Falls’ 55th (first UK broadcast 25th February 1960)
  • Crossroads To Crime’s 55th (UK premiere November 1960)
  • Supercar’s 55th (production started September 1960)
  • UFO’s 45th (first UK broadcast 16th September 1970)
  • Space:1999’s 40th (first UK broadcast 4th September 1975)
  • Space Precinct’s 20th (first UK broadcast 18th March 1995)
  • New Captain Scarlet’s 10th (first UK broadcast 12th February 2005)

Over the weekend we’ll be looking at the amazing visions of the future that the Anderson productions gave us in these series and more.

FANDERSON

The convention is being staged for and by members of Fanderson, the official Gerry Anderson appreciation society. Fanderson is the only official appreciation society for the work of Gerry Anderson, endorsed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment, Anderson Entertainment, Gerry Anderson Productions and ITC Entertainment Group, with over 1,200 members worldwide. Based in the UK and run by a small unpaid committee of fans, Fanderson was formed in 1981 from several small clubs at the request of ITC Entertainment and Gerry Anderson, so that they could support a single independent fan body for all Gerry Anderson productions. As a club, we can only sell merchandise to club members which enables us to keep costs down and direct all our funds into our products and services. No-one takes a salary, ‘mutual trading’ with our members means we’re exempt from certain taxes that would vastly inflate our prices, and because we only trade with our members the various copyright holders are often willing to forego the expensive merchandise licences that commercial companies have to buy. Also, because we’re fellow fans like you, in running the club we take the time and care about the little details in our products that commercial operations often can’t or don’t bother about.

Ticket Prices

Tickets to The Future Is Fantastic! are just £65 per person for one day, or £110 for the whole weekend. We’ve managed to keep the ticket price the same as our TV21 convention in 2010 because we’re a fan club and no-one is taking a salary from it. Note that Saturday or Sunday-only tickets do not include any refreshments that are included in the weekend ticket.

Trial Memberships

If you’re not already a Fanderson member you must apply for a trial membership with your ticket to The Future Is Fantastic! at a special trial price of just £10. The trial membership will start when you arrive at the convention and run until 31st December 2015. This will get you the latest issue of the club’s FAB magazine, membership badge, enable you to buy our merchandise at the convention at special prices, access to our full range of merchandise online, access to the members’ area of the Fanderson Forum.

DRESS CODE
We know from many past conventions that some fans love to dress up and enter into the spirit of the Anderson universe! We want to encourage you to be as creative as you can this year, especially on Saturday night. That’s why we hope to be awarding some prizes for the best dressed out there!

Fanderson survey 2014

The 2014 survey is now open for Fanderson members to complete, and will stay open until the end of this year. The results will be published at the Annual General Meeting in 2015.

This is your chance to feedback to us on everything from club sales items, to conventions to the articles published in FAB. We’d love to hear from you so that we can make Fanderson work even better for it’s members.

To take part in the survey members will need their membership number and the unique security code that is on the mailing label for FAB 79.

One lucky entrant will win a year’s free Fanderson membership. So, good luck!

The security code will change with each FAB. Please keep this safe, as it will also enable you to vote at Fanderson’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday 21st March 2015.
