Friday 29th September 1967: millions sat in front of their televisions, enthralled by The Mysterons – the first episode of Gerry and Sylvia’s Anderson latest creation, Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons.

Fifty years on, and Captain Scarlet fans will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of this ground-breaking series at Special Assignment, Fanderson’s convention for 2017. THE PROGRAMME

Our exhibition of models, puppets, artwork etc is being organised once again by long-time Fanderson member and puppet owner/maker/restorer Chris King, drawing on the generosity of fellow fans and private collectors, so you can be sure it’ll be a humdinger!

TICKETS

special-assignment-casino

As a fan-organised event, the earlier everyone books for Special Assignment, the earlier we know how extravagant we can be in staging the show.

Tickets start at just £65 per person for one day, or £110 for the whole weekend. We’ve managed to keep the ticket price the same as The Future Is Fantastic! convention in 2015 because we’re a fan club and no one is taking a salary. Note that Saturday-only or Sunday-only tickets do not include the Saturday evening meal or any other refreshments that are included in the weekend ticket. Ticket prices will rise on 1st August 2017.

Book your place(s) online now or, if you’d prefer to pay by UK cheque or postal order, complete the registration form and return it to us with your payment.

Not a Fanderson member?

Anyone coming to Special Assignment who isn’t already a Fanderson member (even if you’re coming with a club member) must buy a Trial member ticket which includes a trial Fanderson membership at a special price of £10. The trial membership will start when you arrive at the convention and run until 31st December 2017. This will give you the latest issue of the club’s FAB magazine, membership badge, enable you to buy our merchandise at the convention at special prices, access our full range of merchandise online and access to the members’ area of the Fanderson Forum.

Special Assignment is being staged by Fanderson. The world’s only official Gerry and Sylvia Anderson appreciation society, Fanderson is endorsed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment, Anderson Entertainment, Gerry Anderson Productions and ITC Entertainment Group, with over 1,300 members worldwide. Based in the UK and run by a small unpaid committee of fans, Fanderson was formed in 1981 from several small clubs at the request of ITC Entertainment and Gerry Anderson, so that they could support a single independent fan body for all Anderson productions.

As a club, we can only sell merchandise to club members, which enables us to keep costs down and direct all our funds into our products and services. No one running Fanderson takes a salary, ‘mutual trading’ with our members means we’re exempt from certain taxes that would inflate our prices, and copyright holders are often willing to forego the expensive merchandise licences that commercial companies have to buy. And, because we’re fellow fans like you, we try to take time and care over the little details in our products that commercial operations often can’t or don’t bother about.

Robert Vaughn has died

The late Robert VaughnWe are saddened to hear of the death of Robert Vaughn today, aged 83.

Vaughn starred as Harry Rule in both seasons of The Protectors, the Andersons’ live-action crime thriller that was produced between 1971 to 1973.

Although he was prolific screen actor, he is perhaps best known for the role of Napoleon Solo in the 1960s spy parody The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Other notable roles include the villainous Ross Webster in Superman III and, more recently, aging con artist Albert Stroller in Hustle.

He will be missed by all fans of cult TV and film.

Thunderbirds Are Go returns to ITV with series 2

Thunderbirds Are Go series 2The second series of Thunderbirds Are Go blasted on to television screens on 22nd October, with a double bill of episodes on ITV1.

In its new Saturday afternoon slot, the series launched with Earthbreaker (how did they resist going for the title ‘Groundbreaker’?), an episode that introduces the Mechanic, a ruthless techno-villain with mysterious links to the now-imprisoned Hood, and features a Thunderbird 2 crash landing that  pays tribute to the original Thunderbirds episode, Terror in New York City. Jenna Coleman guest starred in the episode as Baines, the leader of a hapless survey team that ends up being rescued by Scott.

Following a pattern established in the first series, the second story was a space-bound affair. In Ghost Ship, International Rescue explore a spooky abandoned space ship called EDEN, and introduces the X-O Pod, a suit that enables John to undertake his own rescue missions out in space. Sounds like a new toy from Vivid could be in the offing…

Want to talk about series 2?

What did you think of the new episodes? Who is the Mechanic and what is his relationship with the Hood? Will we finally find out what happened to Jeff?!

The Fanderson Forum’s Series 2 episode review section is a great place to tell us your thoughts.

Fanderson releases Ed Bishop audio interviews

Ed Bishop interviews on CDFanderson is very pleased to announce the release of two fascinating audio interviews with Ed Bishop, the man behind UFO’s Commander Straker!

With his timeless and unique voice, Ed Bishop was one of the key ingredients which made Gerry Anderson’s UFO one of the finest television series ever made. Now, in these two interviews recorded nearly 30 years ago, Ed relates his memories of his role as Commander Straker, his co-stars, working for Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and more importantly the story of THAT wig! Hear also, in his own words the story of his early career, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Doppelganger, The Protectors and much more.

The interviews were recorded on Saturday 18th February 1989 at the Whitgift Film Theatre, Grimsby and on Saturday 7th July 1990 at the Central Library Film Theatre, Scunthorpe.

This is a must for every UFO fan and, for that matter, anyone with a fondness for one of TV’s consummate professionals and all-round nice guys.

The two disc set is available exclusively to Fanderson club members and is priced as follows:

  • UK £9.75

2) Which company produced a six-piece Supercar tableware set in the 1960s?
3) Which Fanderson member received a letter from Lady Penelope in 1965?

Email your answers to fabmail@fanderson.org.uk, quoting your fanderson membership number or full name. The closing date is 1st November.
