Commenting on the announcement, Jamie said: “I’m immensely proud to be carrying on the good work, and helping promote an organisation that stands for all the good things that were constant elements in Gerry Anderson shows, and look forward to doing what I can to help IRC in my new role.”

IRC’s Corps Director, Willie McMartin said “The corps has been in existence since 1981 and we will forever be indebted to Gerry Anderson all those years ago. Gerry was instrumental in getting IRC off the ground and without this help we wouldn’t have been able to continue to save lives. It is great news that Jamie is happy to support the corps and we look forward to working with him in the forthcoming years.”

New Gerry Anderson productions are go!

In news that will be hugely exciting to all fans, the new official Gerry Anderson website has been launched to promote the revival of the producer’s unfinished projects.

www.gerryanderson.co.uk is run by Gerry’s son Jamie Anderson and has been heralded by an tantalising series of teaser trailers, one of which was screened at a the recent BritSciFi convention in Leicester. You can see the ‘Stingray version’ above!

Jamie said: “As evidenced by the sheer volume of entertainment that Dad managed to put out over his lengthy career – he was a pretty prolific creative. Over the last 20 years he put together a number of fantastic projects, with several of those being developed since 2005. Sadly he wasn’t well enough to see them through, but it’s important to me that we get them out there. They’ve all got the Anderson magic. There are four of those projects that we’re working on and developing right now.”

“None are what I would call reimaginings. There’s one book and TV project that he was working on for 2 years that, for me, takes all the best elements of an Anderson show and elegantly puts them into a brand new setting. I’m really excited about that one. The others are new but all true to the Anderson spirit.”

Breaking News: ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures to Re-invent Classic Thunderbirds Series

Iconic Series is Back After 50 Years for a 2015 debut on CITV

ITV Studios is to re-invent Thunderbirds 50 years on from its first television debut.

ITV Studios and New Zealand based Pukeko Pictures, in collaboration with Weta Workshop (Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) are to co-produce Thunderbirds are Go! (a working title), a 26 x 30’ major new children’s series set to debut on ITV and the CITV Channel in 2015.

The series will be produced using a unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets. Showcasing Pukeko Pictures’ and Weta Workshop’s creative and technical excellence, it promises to deliver a whole new level of action-adventure animation for today’s audience, whilst paying tribute to the legacy of original series.

Thunderbirds are Go! will be executive produced by Estelle Hughes for ITV Studios, Giles Ridge for ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) and Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith for Pukeko Pictures. The series head writer is Rob Hoegee (Generator Rex, Teen Titans, Ben 10, Slugterra.)

Thunderbirds are Go! is commissioned by Jamila Metran, Head of Programming for CITV, and is currently in pre-production.

Denise O Donoghue, Managing Director ITV Studios UK, comments: “Thunderbirds is a highly respected brand that continues to hold recognition around the world. This cult series is often credited as changing the history of animation and action-adventure, and we look forward to taking the show to another level while retaining the much-loved heritage that has endured over the past fifty years.”

Jamila Metran, Head of Programming for CITV, adds: “Thunderbirds Are Go! will be a hugely exciting new show for the CITV audience. We’re delighted to be working with ITV Studios and the talented teams at Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, whose success and innovation is renowned across the film and television industry. Thunderbirds is a much-loved British institution with significant global recognition, and our audience will relish this timely opportunity to discover the new series fifty years on.”

Richard Taylor, co-owner of Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, says: “Thunderbirds was a hugely influential television series in my childhood. Having watched it originally in black and white, it was only years later that I discovered the full and rich world that Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, Derek Meddings, Mike Trimm and their team created. It is thrilling therefore to think we have the opportunity to work with ITV on this new series inspired by this most wonderful of British shows. I personally, together with the teams here at Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, look forward to designing and creating an inspirational world that will engage the imagination of a whole new generation as it did for us nearly half a century ago.”

Andrew Smith, CEO of Pukeko Pictures, adds: “Pukeko Pictures is focussed on high-quality value-based programming, and we are thrilled to be associated with such an iconic brand, one that brilliantly encompasses family values, heroism and generosity. We are very proud to partner with ITV Studios to create a new era of Thunderbirds.”

ITV Studios Global Entertainment retains worldwide rights to the Thunderbirds brand and is the global distributor for the Thunderbirds Are Go! television series and consumer products.

Gerry Anderson Has Died

Gerry Anderson, known the world over as the film and television producer of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Space:1999 amongst many others, has died at the age of 83.

On hearing the news the chairman of Fanderson Nick Williams paid tribute to him:

“To those who met him Gerry was a quiet, unassuming but determined man. His desire to make the best films he could drove him and his talented teams to innovate, take risks, and do everything necessary to produce quite inspirational works. Gerry’s legacy is that he inspired so many people and continues to bring so much joy to so many millions of people around the world.”

Anderson’s unique style of filmmaking influenced the imaginations and careers of countless creatives that succeeded him, and his productions continue to be shown around the world to new generations of fans.

Gerry was diagnosed with mixed dementia two years ago and his condition worsened quite dramatically over the past six months. Having already decided with his family on a care home for himself earlier this year, he moved in there in October.

Until very recently Anderson remained interested and involved in the film industry, keen to re-visit some of his earlier successes using the latest technology available. His last producer credit came in 2005 on New Captain Scarlet, a CGI-animated re-imagining of his 1967 Supermarionation series, which premiered on ITV in the UK. Most recently he worked as a consultant on a Hollywood remake of his 1969 series UFO, directed by Matthew Gratzner.

He also worked as a celebrity ambassador for The Alzheimer’s Society, helping to raise awareness of the disease and much-needed funds for the society.

Gerry leaves three children from former marriages, Joy, Linda and Gerry Junior, his son Jamie and widow Mary.

Fanderson will pay a full tribute to Gerry Anderson in FAB 74, due in March 2013.

Dolores Mantez Dies

Delores Mantez in the UFO episode Sub-SmashAs many fans will be aware, Dolores Mantez, much loved for her role as Lieutenant Nina Barry in UFO, died in November following a short illness.

Dolores began her career as a singer but went on to appear in a wide range of classic British TV shows in the 1960s and early 1970s, including Danger Man, Z-Cars, Randall and Hopkirk, The Avengers and The Onedin Line, as well as a number of West End productions and musicals. However, it is for her glamorous role as a Moonbase Operative in UFO that she is most fondly remembered. She starred alongside Ed Bishop in the dramatic two-hander Sub-Smash, widely regarded as one of the best episodes in the series and a firm favourite at convention screenings.

Fanderson offers its condolences to her family and will be providing a full obituary in the next issue of FAB.

Harry Oakes dies

Fanderson was saddened to hear of the death of special effects cameraman Harry Oakes on 11th December. Harry began his association with Gerry Anderson when he joined the crew of Fireball XL5 and continued to work on Anderson productions up to Space:1999.  Following this he moved onto a  number of Hollywood blockbusters including Aliens, Superman, Memphis Belle and Flash Gordon before returning to work for Gerry Anderson on Space Precinct. A full obituary will appear in the next issue of FAB.

Harry’s death follows that of director Bob Kellett, who died on 27th November, and whose work included three episodes of Space: 1999.
