New Thunderbirds board game gets amazing fan backing

Thunderbird boardgame

Stretch goalsA Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a new Thunderbirds board game designed by Matt Leacock has smashed all expectations only days into the campaign. With 25 days still to run, over 2,100 backers have pledged nearly £140,000 in an amazing show of support for The Thunderbirds Co-operative Boardgame.

From an initial £20,000 goal to raise funds for the moulds for the game’s plastic models and production, no less than TEN MORE goals have already been reached! The full list of stretch goals can be seen on the right (click to expand).

The success of the project has led to a number of new stretch goals being introduced, including a ‘Play The Hood Expansion’ which will allow a 5th player to join the game and play as the villainous Hood!

Playing the game

A collaboration between hit board game designer Matt Leacock (Pandemic, Forbidden Desert / Forbidden Island) and Modiphius Entertainment, Thunderbirds is a ‘co-operative boardgame’ where the players get the chance to test their skills as members of International Rescue. You and up to three other players take on the role of International Rescue while your arch nemesis, The Hood, is threatening to trigger terrible disasters around the world in an effort to learn your secrets. If you can foil his scheme while completing your missions, then you and your fellow players win the game!

While each player adopts a different character in the game – you could be Scott Tracy or Lady Penelope! – all the characters can operate any of the different vehicles used in the game. You might load up the Mole into Thunderbird 2, fly to Tracy Island, then hop into Thunderbird 3 with Alan and dock with Thunderbird 5 in geo-stationary orbit! The permutations of gameplay are practically limitless and reflect the fact that this is an exciting and intelligent strategy game for players of +10 years. You’ll use all of the vehicles at your disposal to complete different missions around the world and in outer space, and you’ll be continually weighing the threat of any of these individual missions against the overall danger of The Hood’s scheme. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?!

Watch this video to get a run through of the game

What you comes with the game?

The basic game comes with six vehicle models, character pegs and a whole host of cards that define the disasters, events and bonuses that take place throughout the game. The first expansion (stretch goal achieved!) means that you can now choose to add 10 sculpted pod vehicles to your gameboard!

Sculpted pod vehicles

Here at Fanderson we were lucky enough to have an early play of the game in its near-finished form, and we can’t wait to see the final version. Keep your eyes peeled in FAB and this website for an exclusive interview with Matt Leacock and Chris Birch, founder of Modiphius Entertainment.

Make your pledge

In the meantime, there’s still plenty of time for you to make your pledge and grab your own copy of the game. A pledge of £40 gets you the basic game and all base game upgrades, while higher pledge levels will guarantee you the game plus the extremely cool expansions that have already secured in the campaign.

The Future is Fantastic!Three more guests have been confirmed for The Future is Fantastic!, Fanderson’s upcoming Gerry Anderson convention in October.

David Graham, Mike Noble and Terry Adlam have all agreed to take part in the event, and will be very welcome additions to our schedule of interviews taking place over the weekend. You might even get the chance to talk to them in the bar if you buy them a drink!

David Graham
The man of a thousand Supermarionation voices, David Graham will once again be re-united with fellow voice artists Shane Rimmer and Matt Zimmerman. The ‘FAB 3’ will be in high demand as always, in this, the 50th anniversary of the original Thunderbirds series. Of course, we’ll also be asking David about what it was like to play Parker for the second time around!

Mike Noble
Much-loved and respected, comic artist and illustrator Mike Noble was responsible for some of the most beautiful TV Century 21 strips of the 1960s, starting with Fireball XL5. He later contributed to Alan Fennell’s revival of the TV Century 21 strips in the 1990s.

Terry Adlam
Comedy writer Terry Adlam wrote and directed the gag-a-second Dick Spanner, Gerry Anderson’s cult animated series in the 1980s. Perhaps we should expect some fun and games on stage…maybe even some impromptu performances!

This news follows hot on the heels of the first guest announcements, bringing the total number to 13!

The Future is Fantastic! will be Fanderson’s first full weekend convention in five years. It takes place over the weekend of 2nd to the 4th October 2015 at the Holiday Inn Maidenhead.

New video shows the amazing world of Thunderbirds Are Go!

ITV has unveiled the first jaw-dropping shots of the new Thunderbirds world on the series’s Youtube channel.

Titled ‘Thunderbirds Are Go! | Introducing the World’, the video runs to one and half minutes and shows footage of the Thunderbird craft launch bays, the interior of Tracy Island lounge, aerial shots of the island, and what appears to be locations in Japan and an extra-terrestrial mining facility…

Teasingly, the video does not contain any footage of the character. But now the stage is set! Stay tuned for more exciting reveals in the weeks ahead.

The video follows on from a series of ‘blink-and-miss-it’ teaser trailer that commenced over Christmas.

Space:1999 CD wins award for Best Archival Release for 2014

Space1999 Sountrack CD Pack Shot

Fanderson’s 40th anniversary Space:1999 soundtrack CD has won an award for best Archival Release for 2014.

Reel Music announced that the triple-CD set had beaten these other great titles to first place:

  • Crash (1996) (Howard Shore) (Howe Records)
  • Dragon (2013) (Tim Phillips) (Eyeball Music)
  • The Pioneers of Movie Music: Sounds of the American Silent Cinema (1912-1928) (Various composers) (New World Records)
  • Predator 2 (1990) (Alan Silvestri) (Varese Sarabande CD Club)

Reel Music’s Alan Rogers called the  Space:1999 release a ‘lovingly presented set’ and that ‘Barry Gray’s iconic scores have never sounded so good.’

Club members clearly agree, as the CDs have  been flying off the shelves at Fanderson Towers since the set was released back in August last year.

The only down note for Alan was that ‘unfortunately, this release is limited to Fanderson club members.’

Well, with the club’s eagerly-awaited 50th anniversary Thunderbirds soundrack CD just around the corner, there’s certainly never been a better time to join Fanderson!
