UK: The Footage Detectives look at the work of Denise Bryer

Talking Pictures TV is a British free-to-air vintage film and nostalgia television channel. Their regular Footage Detectives slot on 6th March 2022, looks at the life and career of Denise Bryer. Denise was, amongst many others, the voice of Twizzle in The Adventures Of Twizzle, Martha Jones in Four Feather Falls, Mary Falconer in Terrahawks and Dr Julie Sigmund in GFI (of which only one episode is known to have been completed and still exists). Beyond Anderson productions, she voiced Makara in Star Fleet, The Junk Lady in Labyrinth, Kiki the frog in Hector’s House, and more.

In each episode of Footage Detectives, producer/editor (and founder of Talking Pictures TV) Noel Cronin talks all things film with musician and disc jockey Mike Read. Also in the 6th March edition will be a look at Torquay in the 50s/60s, a plea to help Nettlefold Studios and a look at the studios history, viewers’ letters about the Humphries Film Labs short film, viewers’ findings from a No Hiding Place ‘Jigsaw’ and an ‘unknown reel’.

Talking Pictures TV is available in the UK on Freeview 82, Freesat 306, Sky 328 or Virgin Media 445, and they’ve recently launched their Encore streaming service too.

If you know of an Anderson (or Anderson-related) production being broadcast, anywhere in the world, please email details to fanderson.org.uk@outlook.com so we can share the news!

Another new ‘must-have’ Space:1999 book on the way!

Another must-have book, coming soon from Signum Books, is “the first fully illustrated book dedicated to Space:1999”.

Space:1999 The Vault, by Chris Bentley, is a deluxe, full-colour 208-page hardback which includes many rare and newly discovered images from the 48 episodes of what is considered to be Gerry Anderson’s greatest TV series.

The lavish science-fiction drama Space:1999 has captivated audiences around the world since its debut in 1975. The series starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, and was created by legendary producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. This definitive and fully authorised book includes a wealth of previously unpublished images – including new shots of original studio models and vintage merchandise.

Author Chris Bentley is a former Fanderson chairman and the author of The Complete Book of Thunderbirds (2000)The Complete Gerry Anderson: The Authorised Episode Guide (2005)The Complete Book of Gerry Anderson’s UFO (2016) and Captain Scarlet: The Vault (2017).

Other Signum Books’ Anderson titles include Captain Scarlet: The Vault and Shane Rimmer’s autobiography From Thunderbirds To Pterodactyls.

Celebrating 40 FAB Years (albeit a year late!)

It seems quite remarkable now, but Fanderson has been a part of all our lives for 40 years.

It’s grown from quite humble beginnings, when producer/writer/director Gerry Anderson recognised the need to bring together various disparate groups into a cohesive club for all fans of his work.

Nowadays, when many other media-related clubs have closed down, gone online, or been taken over by the production companies involved, we’re a rare breed. A club created and run by fans, for fans.

Now, 41 years later, we’re celebrating this milestone (we’d planned to do it in 2021, but Covid-19 and travel restrictions put paid to that!).

40 FAB Years is not a convention, but a relaxed party. The perfect occasion to catch up with friends you’ve made through Fanderson over the years, and some special guests will be celebrating with us. We’ll have a barbecue and, like all good birthday parties, there’ll be music, drink and (of course) a cake!

We’ve got space for just 100 Fanderson members to join us at the Pinewood Hotel, a little way down the road from the world famous studios in Buckinghamshire. We’ll be there from 14:00 on Saturday 20th August 2022.

Help your Anderson favourite become a Lego set!

There are seven Anderson-inspired projects on Lego Ideas right now that need your support to become reality!

Lego Ideas was set up so that budding Lego set designers could see their design made into sets that we could all buy. Fans can click to support the designs they like and, if a project gets over 10,000 supporters, it goes on to be assessed by the Lego team as a potential set.

Since Lego Ideas was set up in 2010 (as Lego Cuusoo), 49 sets have been produced on a wide range of topics.

Andrew Clark has been luckier than most budding designers, as his Doctor Who and The Flintstones sets were both chosen to become reality. He currently has three projects on the Ideas platform:

Bob Bell studio drawings for auction

On 12th February 2022, specialist collectables and memorabilia auctioneers Excalibur will be offering the second part of late author Simon Archer’s collection, including six drawings by series art director Bob Bell.

Bob worked on many of the Anderson TV productions and was art director and supervising art director on Thunderbirds Season 1 and 2 respectively, as well as on the Thunderbirds films.

The series of six pencil and watercolour sketches (lots 547 to 552) represents the evolution of the Supermarionation technique and featured in Gerry Anderson’s lecture tour in the 90s. Estimate is £200 to £400 for each lot.

The auction includes much, much more, and the full catalogue can be seen here.

Terry Curtis puppets for auction

Sworders fine art auctioneers are offering two puppets by Century 21 puppet sculptor Terry Curtis as part of their upcoming Out of the Ordinary sale on 15th February 2022.

Curtis joined AP Films in Slough in 1964 as an assistant in the Art Department. A short period into his tenure, a position opened within the team of John Blundell and John Brown, the art directors of Thunderbirds. Curtis began making characters for the background, which mainly involved sculpting and painting plasticine. It wasn’t until 1966 and the first film, Thunderbirds Are Go, that he got the opportunity to work on the main cast, which included Captain Paul Travers and Hank Marvin of The Shadows.

Following the success of the film, Curtis was tasked with creating several members of the cast for the series that followed – Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons. For this series, Curtis devised and created several members of the key cast, including Captain Blue, Ochre, and Grey. Curtis remained with Century 21  until the early 70s, working on the second Thunderbirds film, Thunderbirds 6, and the final Supermarionation production of Gerry Anderson’s The Secret Service.

Lot 279 is Captain Grey. A modern Supermarionation puppet sculpted by Terry Curtis, from Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1967 for ITV, modelled in a Spectrum uniform, holding the signature Captain Scarlet pistol, mounted on a wooden base with a brass plaque, labelled with a microchip of authenticity. 63cm high. Guide price £6,000-8,000.

Before being invited by Captain Scarlet to join Spectrum, Captain Grey was an officer of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol, and his looks and character were loosely based on Sean Connery’s portrayal of James Bond. Although a modern sculpture, this puppet has been made according to the same methods and standards as the original 1960s puppets. Curtis has made several modern reproductions; however, he is adamant that each is as faithful to their original counterparts as possible, from using period paints and resins to such minute detailing as sourcing individual Lightning Zip fastenings from old sewing boxes. Likewise, the internal mechanics remain true to the original designs, making each puppet a masterpiece of both puppeteering and engineering. The one difference is that each modern reproduction is microchipped to provide an invisible signature of authenticity by Curtis.

Lot 280 is ‘The Atlantian’. A Supermarionation puppet made by Terry Curtis for a production by Gerry Anderson meant to succeed The Secret Service in 1969/1970. 61cm high. Guide price £8,000-10,000.

‘The Atlantian’ was made by Curtis for a show intended to succeed The Secret Service in 1970. An outlined script had been in production by Des Saunders, the senior producer of both Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds, since 1966. It was meant to feature a family living in Atlantis, with the power to teleport to Earth, helping people in distress. The script was taken to Gerry Anderson; however, it was ultimately abandoned in favour of the live action show UFO. With the show never making it into production, the puppet remained in its case with Curtis, making a brief appearance on the Antiques Roadshow around the turn of the millennium.

Supermarionation voice artist Gary Files on The Secret Service Annual

Gary Files recently received his copy of our exclusive The Secret Service Annual at home in Australia and wrote to say:

“What a splendid job you have all done. The Secret Service Annual will be here for my daughter and grandchild when I cash in my chips! It has pride of place on my library shelves, or will have when I’ve read it again!”

The actor and Supermarionation voice artist (Thunderbird 6‘s Black Phantom/Captain Foster, Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons‘ Captain Magenta, The Secret Service’s Matthew and UFO’s Phil Wade) went on to recollect:

“When I got my copy of The Secret Service Annual I was tickled pink! There we all were doing our parts in those perky episodes with dear Stanley Unwin. And what memories it’s layout brought back to me.

“For many years now I have been carrying around with me, from country to country, a copy of something I bought for 7 old pence way back in 1967, some time after I had started working for Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and their Century 21 company as one of the wonderful voice team. It was a newspaper called Century 21- Adventures in the 21st century!

“Also listed was this information: “Universe Edition 140, Dateline September 23rd 2067”. And so much of it was laid out very much like The Secret Service Annual. What a great souvenir to have for fans of Gerry’s animation to complete the series of annuals that Fanderson members have collected over the years.

“Two other coincidences occurred to me: September is my birthday month and I actually bought the paper on 23rd of September 1967.

“So, if you are a fan of Gerry, and all of us who had the pleasure of working for him – this is a great addition to add to your collection.

“Cheers to you all in Britain from us in Oz during this awful Covid time.”

Gary Files.
